The Official Rules of Beer Pong

The Official Rules of Beer Pong

Beer pong is the single best drinking game to play at a party with friends and or other people that wish to lose to you. If you've somehow never played it is a drinking game that involves throwing ping pong balls into cups filled with beer. The objective of the game is to sink as many balls as possible. Once a ball has landed into a cup you must drink the beer in that cup, with the losing team drinking the remaining beer.

These are the official rules for Beer Pong as set by winners and title holders.
  1. Teams: The game is played with two teams of two players each + 1 celebrity (a third friend) fill in to cover toilet breaks and getting more drinks. Each team stands at opposite ends of a long table and takes turns throwing the ping pong balls.

  2. Cups: The cups are arranged in a triangle formation on the table, with each row having fewer cups than the one before it. A standard game has 10 cups, but this can vary.

  3. Balls: The ping pong balls are usually played with standard size and weight. Ideally two balls will be used, one for each player. A single ball game is acceptable as well but is much less exciting.

  4. Throwing: Players take turns throwing their ping pong balls at the cups on the opposite end of the table. Elbows can't extend over the shooters side of the table. If a ball lands in a cup, the opposing team must drink the contents of that cup. If both balls land in the same cup a total of three cups must be drank of the shooting teams choice.

  5. Bounce Shots: If a ball bounces into a cup, the shot is considered a “bounce shot” and is worth two cups. The opposing team can swat a ball away after the bounce.

  6. Re-racks: Teams can call for a single re-rack at any point in the game to rearrange the cups into a different formation of their choice.

  7. Redemption: At the end of the game, the losing team can attempt to redeem themselves by shooting at the remaining cups. If they sink all of the balls, they can continue play with a new single cup.

  8. No Spillage: If a player spills any of the beer while drinking, they must refill the cup and drink it again.

  9. Return Ball: If somehow the shooting team manages to get the ball back after shooting it they are allowed a trick shot. This normally entails closed eyes, behind the back or bouncing off a nearby wall or ceiling. If this shot goes in the opposing team must drink two cups.

  10. Blowing Balls 👀: If a ball lands on the side of your cup you are allowed to attempt to blow it back out of the cup.
These are some fun extra rules. You can either include all or none of these.
  1. Double Air Ball Kiss: If both players on the same team air ball, which means miss the table completely, they have to kiss. This results in some of the most abrasive aiming at the table you have ever seen.
  2. Drinking Cup Win: If you manage to throw a ball into a cup or drink that is outside of the game that one of the opponents is drinking out of you, you automatically win.
  3. Balls Back: If both players manage to sink balls into cups in a round, they get the balls back to shoot again which can result in the quick elimination of many cups.
In conclusion, beer pong is a fun and competitive game that can be played with friends. Always play responsibly and never drink and drive.

  • Don’t you mean Beirut. If you’re going to claim these are the ‘official’ rules of the game you should at least get the name of the sport right!
